"SINGIN' IN THE RAIN"
at Westchester Broadway Theater
|
I'm a sucker for a good special effect. And I have to admit--when actual rain began to fall on the stage of the Westchester Broadway dinner theater, I was charmed. The show is "Siningin' the Rain." This was the title number. And the water raining down on the stage from overhead pipes--lots of water; patrons sitting near the stage risked getting a bit of the spray--was a perfect touch.

I liked the production for far more than that special effect, of course. But the rain falling down, as the star sang and danced in it--that was a terrific touch!

| This is a most enjoyable production--witty, stylishly designed, and rich with melody. Directed and choreographed by Richard Stafford, this stage adaptation of a classic MGM film musical is well-cast.
I particularly liked this production's star, Jeremy Benton; the very timbre of his light voice was lovely. Allie Schauer was a hoot as Lina Lamont, the silent-film star with the bad voice, whose career is threatened by the arrival of talking pictures. Shannon M. O'Bryan and Cody Williams were fine in the other leading roles.

The script by Betty Comden & Adolph Green is funny throughout; the vintage songs, including "Make "em Laugh," "Good Morning" "Gotta Dance" and "Broadway Melody" are hard to resist. This is light, cheerful musical comedy, set in Hollywood in the late 1920s. Nothing profound here. Just good, old-style entertaunment.
